About Jackson
For 15 years, I've taught creative writing to students ranging from middle schoolers through retirees. As the only person ever dual-accepted to the #1-ranked Iowa Writers' Workshop in both poetry and fiction, a summa cum laude USC grad (creative writing / narrative studies), and a widely published poet and author, I help writers find their voices, "kill their darlings," and publish their work.
I've also served as editor-in-chief of a literary magazine and full-time editor of a major Los Angeles theater publishing company, experiences I leverage to help writers self-publish their own writing and/or launch their own indie presses. (It's easier than you'd think!)
Across my undergraduate and high-school workshops, I consistently achieved department-leading student evaluations, many of which echoed the same refrain: "Initially, I dreaded taking a writing class, but thanks to Jackson, I loved it."

In virtual sessions, I employ Iowa-style creative feedback paired with dialectics and the Socratic method—basically, I ask you thoughtful questions interrogating your work, provide line / structure edits, and help you situate it amongst the canon. I believe that (in addition to reading voraciously) writers must engage in rigorous literary conversation if they want to grow. Which other writers' work is yours in conversation with? What intention drives you? Who is your ideal reader? And how can we get your writing in their hands?
I've been a college instructor, professional editor, essay coach, and lifelong word nerd. Let's get to work!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by students with Jackson.
Perfect! Jackson, I’m not even sure where to begin. I went into our first session not knowing what to expect, and what I received completely blew me away.
First, I want to acknowledge that you were ready to go right on time and we were able to jump in immediately, which I really appreciated. You provided a brief overview of your background and qualifications, while also taking the time to listen to my goals and expectations as a student. That helped me feel confident that we were aligned from the jump.
I also genuinely appreciate the “off-the-clock” time you spent reviewing a bit of my writing in advance. You came prepared with valuable, thoughtful feedback and I especially appreciated you sharing the reading recommendations that could help shape my voice and reflect my style back to me.
Your line item feedback resonated and felt accurate and insightful. I appreciated both the positive notes and the constructive criticism, as well as the time you took to explain the reasoning behind your suggestions. This made it much easier for me to understand how to apply your feedback to future writing as well.
I’m really looking forward to continuing our work together. Thank you for such a great first session!- Xavier is thoughtful, talented, passionate, and communicative about both his creative output and learning style. He receives critical feedback well and, crucially, has a profound "why" driving his work. Meeting and discussing both writing at large and Xavier's own nonfiction was a pleasure.Jackson's response :

Jackson does it all; in the many years that I’ve known him, he has thrived as a professional editor, creative writing coach, undergraduate English instructor, and college consultant. His students love his encouraging style of mentorship and narrative expertise, and when I’ve collaborated with him on writing projects, I’ve always admired his patience, professionalism, and creativity.
As a schoolteacher, I know how important it is for educators to balance subject mastery with professional empathy. Jackson embodies both. Parents love him for his experience and accolades, and students love him for his candor. I’ve referred past students to work with him, and I certainly will again in the future.
Jackson is an excellent tutor who balances high standards with structural support informed by 15 years in education. I can vouch for his absolute dedication to everything he takes on. He is reliable, deeply thoughtful, and genuinely cares about the intellectual growth of his students. He’s also a widely published poet and writer with college admissions expertise. 10/10 would recommend.
Having been Jackson’s classmate, friend, roommate, and business partner, I’ve seen every side of him. What sets Jackson apart is his ability to guide students through complex, long-term goals without letting them get overwhelmed. On top of teaching the mechanics of writing and critical thinking, he helps his students find their unique voices and build out real, impressive projects from scratch.
