About Sarafina

Hi! I'm Sarafina, an Economics graduate from Spelman College with a minor in Mathematics. I have a strong background in calculus, algebra, probability, and statistics, and I love helping students make sense of challenging concepts.

I have professional teaching experience working with teenagers and adults in Cusco, Peru, where I learned to adapt my instruction to different learning styles, abilities, and goals. I also have experience helping classmates work through challenging mathematics courses.

As a tutor, I'm patient, encouraging, and focused on building genuine understanding rather than memorization. My goal is to help students become confident, independent problem-solvers who feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes along the way.

My approach to tutoring is centered on helping students understand mathematics rather than simply memorize formulas or procedures. I believe students learn best when they're actively involved in solving problems, asking questions, and figuring things out for themselves.

I like to start by understanding what a student already knows, where they're getting stuck, and what they hope to accomplish. From there, I tailor each lesson to their needs. A typical session might begin with reviewing a challenging concept, working through a few examples together, and then giving the student opportunities to solve problems independently while I provide guidance and feedback.

I prefer asking questions over immediately giving answers. By encouraging students to explain their reasoning and explore different approaches, I help them develop problem-solving skills and confidence that extend beyond a single assignment or exam.

I graduated from Spelman College with a degree in Economics and a minor in Mathematics. I've studied subjects ranging from calculus and linear algebra to probability and statistics, and I have experience helping classmates understand challenging mathematical concepts. I also have professional teaching experience in Peru, where I taught students of different ages, backgrounds, and proficiency levels. That experience strengthened my ability to adapt explanations, recognize when students are confused, and make lessons engaging.

I offer tutoring in algebra, precalculus, calculus, and statistics for middle school, high school, and introductory college-level students. Whether you're trying to catch up, prepare for an exam, or deepen your understanding of a subject, my goal is to make mathematics feel more approachable and help you become a more independent learner.
