About Trevor
I have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Africa, Mexico, and Malaysia. Before this, I worked in schools as a teacher, counsellor, psychologist, social worker, and learning support teacher across Canada and in the Caribbean. Besides this, I have worked in a variety of other types of work, so I am familiar with the "English" needed in different workplaces, for example, restaurants and hospitality. I am now back in small-town Saskatchewan particularly eager to help newcomers to Canada.

The important thing is to start where students are at, work with that, and move them forward to better English. I have three university degrees and have written more things (of all types) than I can remember, yet I am still "learning English" myself every day. As a teacher it is important that I continually recognize the achievements of students at every level of proficiency. English is not an "easy" language to learn for most people--it is in fact hard to master--but it is a powerful one full of all sorts of potential for rich communication. But as I have said, we must start where the earner is at--likely, for most people, with sentences and vocabulary simpler than what I have just written!
There is a place for formal, typical assignments, and there is a time for playful, relaxed, practice in conversation focusing on "fine-tuning" skills to date. Idioms can be especial fun. But still, work will be required; vocabulary is not acquired without effort.
