About Karen

I just recently retired from education after 27 years. The first 23 years were spent teaching mostly 4-6th grades. I have a BCLAD degree from California which says I am qualified to teach Spanish speaking second language learners.

For the last four years of my career, I was in charge of our district's reading intervention program. I was responsible for training our 25 intervention teachers and overseeing students' reading progress based on ongoing data. I gained SO many valuable resources and strategies during that time to help me work individually with students today.

Teaching writing was one of my greatest strengths and passions during my career. Grammar and linguistics were my concentrations in college and I continue to educate myself about the nuances of the English language to this day.

Finally, I love getting to know my students and develop a great professional relationship and rapport with them. We not only learn together but always have fun. I have specific tools I use to help motivate students and guide them to train themselves to be aware of how they think and learn (metacognition). I have tools to help them learn better in all subject areas.

About the lesson

Just to warm up- my lessons are geared towards 3rd grade students and up. First, I like to get to know my students to see what motivates them and learn what topics interest them. I base my curriculum on this to make the lessons more enjoyable and relevant. After that, I do a fluency and retell assessment to make sure the student is on target in those areas. If fluency is on target, we move forward with a plan to address comprehension, which will also incorporate vocabulary development. As an educator of 27 years, mostly teaching 4-6th grades, my last four years were spent outside the classroom to lead our district's reading intervention program. In that role, I gained access to great data based resources to improve fluency and comprehension. My lessons will always incorporate writing as studies show that writing to reading improves comprehension. I choose the lesson articles based on Lexile (level of difficulty combined with age appropriate content) and topics that interest the student to increase motivation for our lessons.

I have had great results with my tutoring strategies. One 6th grade student I tutored went from a 3rd grade comprehension level to a 7th grade level in just a little over a year. My many years in the classroom where I taught a minimum of 32 students at a time, helped me learn what best motivates and captures students' interests, while keeping things moving along to best make use of limited time. Finally, I truly enjoy helping students gain skills and confidence and that joy is what motivates me!
