About Luisa
I graduated from Bard College with my Bachelor's degree in Written Arts and Literature and a focus on French, including studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. I've also worked as a teacher's aide in New Orleans both in group settings and one-on-one with individual students, organizing activities and assisting with their schoolwork. I concentrate mostly on high school curriculum in my tutoring, with a particular focus on essay writing and French language skills. I also offer tutoring for non-native English speakers, who are looking to improve their fluency in the language.

As an English tutor, I devote time to understanding and practicing the function of essay writing -- I consider it an important skill in applying for colleges, in addition to a significant part of the SAT. I pay close attention to both spelling and grammar, and the various ways to approach improvement in both. I also focus on enrichment of the texts currently being read in school -- how to approach them from a different angle that might lead to better understanding for the student, and how to write and converse meaningfully about their themes.
As a tutor for non-native English speakers, I adapt my lesson plan as needed to the student's individual needs, but the primary goal is always to work toward fluency, ensure comprehension, and improve speech. I use a variety of instruction techniques, including visual aids, to ensure ease of understanding so the lessons can progress from basic sentence structure to more complex grammar and conversation.
As a French tutor, I work with students of varying levels, from beginner to intermediate. I review essential grammar, including conjugation, verb tenses, in addition to spelling, written and spoken French. I believe that learning French should be fun! When teaching a second language, I believe it's essential to adjust to the student's learning style, not the other way around, and I strive to make sure the student and I set clear goals for their improvement together.
