My teaching method focuses on making the materials more relatable to students in order to make them more willing to dwell deeper on what they have read, so that eventually they will be able to develop a more genuine and memorable understanding of the contents. A typical lesson would start by casual conversations about certain themes from what we are about to read, and end with a discussion on if our previous beliefs about the themes have been effected, changed or strengthened after an in depth close reading. When it comes to test prep, I like to focus more on letting the students understand the real purpose of the exam in terms of what kind of knowledge or skill the test makers want to see from students, so they can learn to more effectively search for the right information they need and properly translate the information into answers. Each lesson would ideally focus on one or two specific types of questions so the students can have a focused introduction, impression and practice on them.
I am a recent English major grad from Vassar College. I had two years of experience teaching SAT, TOEFL and some academic English in Shanghai, China. I taught both 1 on 1 and group lessons, with students ranging from 15-20 years old. Most of my students got an improvement of around 100 in SAT and 10-20 in TOEFL.
