About Amritha
I am a graduate of the University of Iowa, holding an English and Creative Writing BA and a Secondary English Education BA, where I also worked as an Honors Writing Fellow. Now, I am an MFA candidate at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago, where I am studying Creative Writing, and working in the Writing Center.
These opportunities have given me ample experience working with very young children learning how to read for the first time, high schoolers seeking support with English class homework and SAT/ACT prep, college applicants hoping to perfect their personal essays, and even college students hoping for support with their essays. My time working as a Writing Fellow and Writing Center Tutor has prepared me to tackle any English and writing worries or problems students might have.
Additionally, I have had nearly five years of experience working as an online tutor at Varsity Tutors. There, I taught SAT/ACT Prep, High School English, and College English, and learned how to best use technology and remote learning techniques to best support my students. Assistive Technology and other accessible learning tools are familiar tools to my practice. In an increasingly digital world, I give great importance to nurturing the human with the aid of the internet.
In addition to Beginning Reading, High School and College English, Essay Writing, and SAT/ACT Prep, I am thrilled to work with students pursuing Creative Writing, whether it be a first personal foray, or for a class! My flexibility, patience, culturally relevant pedagogy, and compassionate approach to teaching make me a standout tutor for any subject or age.

I am a compassionate tutor who believes in collaborative rather than rote learning. Students and I work together to parse difficult readings, draft powerful arguments, and solve challenging problems. This student-led approach encourages the building of real and original problem-solving skills that tutees can use for life. My teaching method is characterized by my patience and adaptability, and my willingness to shift to any teaching style a student needs, whether that be hands-on kinesthetic learning, visual learning, audio learning, or more. This compassion-led teaching style and extreme adaptability to all learning needs is what sets me apart as a flexible, hands-on, supportive tutor.
A typical lesson plan will start by summarizing the previous lesson's topics, addressing any questions that arose since our last meeting, and hearing a little about the student's life. These contexts, both educational and personal, are essential for crafting a fruitful lesson. We will then walk through the day's agenda, which will typically include the introduction of a topic, and then the I Do - We Do - You Do model. In this structure, I will provide an example of solving the problem, then we will tackle it together, then I will allow the student to try it on their own. This is a technique crafted to build confidence and scaffold the student into their own abilities. A lesson will typically end with a review of the day, expectations of the following meeting, and a brief friendly chat about what the next few days will bring to their life!
As a holder of an English and Creative Writing BA and a Secondary English Education BA, and a student currently pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing, my lessons are suitable for a range of students. I have had ample experience working with very young children learning how to read for the first time, high schoolers seeking support with English class homework and SAT/ACT prep, college applicants hoping to perfect their personal essays, and even college students hoping for support with their essays. In addition to Beginning Reading, High School and College English, Essay Writing, and SAT/ACT Prep, I am thrilled to work with students pursuing Creative Writing, whether it be a first personal foray, or for a class!
