About Urja Priyadarshini

Hey guys! I'm Urja and I graduated with an English Honours degree in 2020 and am currently pursuing Environment, Development and Policy at the University of Sussex. English is and will always be my first love, and to be honest, I wouldn't really have known what to do with my life if I hadn't pursued it in my undergraduation. I'm here because I love to engage in discussion - with literally anyone and everyone - and thereby interaction and activity will be the basis of my teaching relationship with you. In my classes, I accept and actually promote diversity of opinion and interpretation. No answer is ever right or wrong when it comes to literary analysis or critical thinking, but there are always opportunities to learn more and that's what I aim to do. So if you're interested at all in any field ranging from English, Film, Critical Thinking or Research Writing, I hope you take this opportunity to work with me so that we can both learn from each other!

About the lesson

Personally, I believe in creating an environment that promotes engagement and interest in the subject. English has been one of my favourite subjects for as long as I can remember, but I never truly realised the vastness of its scope until I pursued it in my under-graduation. At this juncture, I was introduced to cultural studies and thereby the relevant skills of critical thinking and research writing that go with it. However, what stuck with me the most is that a "text" is not limited to just literary works and film, but is in fact anything at all that engages you from the neighbourhood you live in, to the video game that you're so obsessed with. So when you're studying and analysing literature, you're not just reading some old story but you're learning about society, cultures, behaviours and thought processes that uncover why we are the way we are.
A typical length of my lesson is anywhere between 1-2 hours but I tend to fix it after consulting my students because I am aware that every person has a different attention span and may have varied needs. I've mentored many of my juniors from school and college and even some of my classmates during my undergraduation so I'm equipped to teach English at all levels. However, when it comes to critical theory I do prefer engaging with high school and university students, since the theoretical concepts can often seem complex and/or difficult to grasp at lower levels.
