About Hermela

Hi, I’m Hermela, a UNSW Engineering student and recent IB graduate. I scored 7/7 in IB English A: Literature and achieved an overall 8.5 in IELTS, including a Band 9 in Speaking.

I have experience tutoring younger children from mainland China who were learning English as an additional language (EAL). Because I finished school recently, I remember what assessments actually demand, and I explain things step by step rather than just telling you the answer. Helping students who feel stuck or unconfident in English is my priority.

I help students with:
● Grammar, spelling and vocabulary foundations
● Writing: narrative, persuasive, and analytical essays
● Reading comprehension and text analysis
● NAPLAN writing and reading preparation (Years 3, 5, 7, 9)
● Selective High School test writing preparation
● Speaking, presentations and oral assessments
● IELTS preparation (Speaking, Writing, Reading)

For senior students, I focus on essay structure, close analysis of texts, and building a clear argument. These skills carry across to any senior English course, including HSC English, IB, etc.

About the lesson

Every lesson is built around your child’s actual school work. Send me the assessment task, marking criteria, or a recent piece of writing, and we’ll work from that.

A typical session:

1) Quick check-in and review of the last task
2) Focused teaching on one skill (e.g. paragraph structure, using evidence, sentence variety)
3) Guided practice with feedback in real time
4) A short task to do before the next lesson

Younger students: visual aids, short activities and conversation to keep them engaged.
Older students: annotated reading, timed writing practice and detailed written feedback.

● Delivery: Online via Zoom, with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing.
● Special Offer: Free 45-minute introductory lesson: We’ll meet, look at a piece of your child’s work, talk about goals, and decide together if I’m the right fit. No obligation.
● Availability: Once we agree that we are fit for each other, I will send the student my calendar.
