About John
I’ve taught writing, literature, and film courses and for more than a decade at the University of Wisconsin. I even get to teach classes on horror movies and science fiction movies, which always attract the coolest students!
I also help groups of high school students with writing projects for every subject (from chemistry lab reports to college and scholarship applications), and in the process they’ve taught me how important it is for you to trust me before I can give you feedback on your writing. That’s a teaching philosophy that I make a conscious effort to follow.

We’ll start with a short conversation about the English classes you’ve already taken, how you did, and how you feel about reading and writing in general. This conversation helps me adapt my tutoring specifically to you: If you’re dealing with writer’s block, or if you need a second set of eyes to make sure your arguments make sense, know that we’re going to work together the entire time. My favorite moments are seeing the light bulbs illuminate over my students’ heads – the moment that my lessons click.
