About Maria
I am currently studying English Language and Literature at the University of Reading from which I had received an unconditional offer due to outstanding academic performance. Teaching is something I have always been passionate about which is why I am already looking to pursue as many opportunities as possible to become the best teacher I can. I have attended an intensive two-day seminar in London by TeachFirst which allowed me to build on a number of valuable skills, including lesson planning, time management and self-reflection. I will also be volunteering at a secondary school for the duration of ten weeks, helping students to improve in areas including, but not limited to, essay writing and literary analysis. Above everything, I am really looking forward to connecting with other people and inspiring them to appreciate the beauty and power of language and literature.

My teaching approach is both well-defined as well as adaptable depending on the lesson's focus and the student's need(s). Overall, I have a clearly structured plan which breaks the lesson into time slots which are based on reviewing the student's prior knowledge, including practice to introduce new ideas and material and self-reflective methods to ensure that the material has been understood. I also strongly believe in effective interaction and communication with the student which can only be achieved if objectives are clearly set at the beginning of the lesson. Lastly, it is extremely important to appreciate that every single student is different and, as such, I look to tailor my lesson according to the student, challenging them as much as necessary but also being patient and understanding of their struggles.

Maria tutored me in English Literature A Level for a year and I cannot recommend her enough. I found really useful that she would set objectives and came up with a plan so that we could tackle those objectives. Before our lessons, I really struggled with analysing texts and planning essays. Maria showed me different techniques and included lots of practice, which helped me develop my analytical and planning skills. Maria was also always excited for our lessons which made me feel supported and motivated.
