I value the cultivation of a comfortable environment, as tutoring offers the opportunity for taking risks, should there be a safe, trusting environment. I want my students to feel at ease to make riskier, less-trusted decisions in this class.
Generally, I believe grounding understanding is the best place to start. I start classes with a text, be it an excerpt of a novel, a poem, or an article, and we decipher and analyse it according to the analysis structure. Then, we discuss it in simple, conversational terms, turning at last to written exercises to strengthen abilities in translating vague analyses into academic, robust essays. This structure will vary student to student, class to class, but gives an idea of how a single session may run.
