About Emma
Hello! I'm Emma, I'm 19 and I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland. I'm going into my second year studying English and History at Queen's University, Belfast with the hopes to become an English teacher. I enjoy tutoring because it gives me a chance to interact with all sorts of students and find alternate approaches that work best for different people. I volunteered at a homework club for young children who did not speak English as a first language or had minimal English at all, and I found that figuring out ways to explain concepts to pupils is something I enjoy. I really do love teaching and getting to know students, what they respond to and showing them how English can be enjoyable at least a little!

When it comes to tutoring, I will try and work with what the student feels they need the most help with. I ask what they have covered about the topic in school, and try to work with the style they are being taught in while introducing new ways to look at things. I try to rotate what unit we cover each week so as to keep each unit fresh in their heads. My general style of teaching is reactive, and while I make plans, I do focus on what is important to each student week by week and what they are most anxious about. I also recommend pupils at a higher level to write essays to have me mark if they have the time to. I keep a log in my documents of areas they are improving in, what they need work on and what they are most nervous about, implementing a sort of traffic light system by which to organise this. In summary, I believe the best way to tutor someone is to meet them where they are, and go from there.
