About James
I am an English literature graduate, currently taking a gap year between my Master's and PhD (in which I hope to study Victorian poetry and religion). My academic achievements are considerable: an undergraduate dissertation receiving maximum marks, Oxford postgraduate degree, and growing portfolio of peer-reviewed publications. Literature is my passion and I love nothing so much as sharing my enthusiasm for its subtle capacity for meaning.
Personally, I have travelled extensively throughout the world, including five years spent in Nigeria, and have encountered an illuminating range of cultural perspectives. In my spare time I enjoy reading (predictably).

My lessons are fundamentally tutorial-based, encouraging students to engage in discussions an equal thinkers. In a one-on-one setting, I engage with a student's own critical instincts, drawing out their opinions with questions and suggestions so they learn to develop and refine their opinions independently. When required, I can present on literary or critical history and my own critical takes but I find English is a subject best learnt dialogically.
I would typically offer hour-long lessons to secondary-age students or older, though I am somewhat flexible on both points.
