About Tara

Hi, I'm Tara! I'm a final-year Urban Planning and Development student at Cardiff University, Student Mentor, and qualified swimming instructor. I achieved ABB at A Level, including an A in English Literature, and have a passion for helping students build confidence in their abilities.

Alongside my academic and professional experience, I've supported fellow students through mentoring and informal tutoring, helping them navigate coursework, revision, and exam preparation. I believe that every student learns differently, so I aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment tailored to individual needs.

Outside of my studies, I enjoy photography, swimming, trampolining, art, and community volunteering. My goal is simple: to make learning feel accessible, enjoyable, and achievable for every student.

About the lesson

Getting to Know You

I like to begin with a short introductory session where we can discuss your current level, strengths, areas for improvement, and what you hope to achieve through tutoring. I also want to understand how you learn best. Some students prefer a patient, confidence-building approach, while others benefit from regular homework, practice questions, and more structured accountability. This session helps me understand how I can best support you.

Personalised Learning

Following our initial discussion, I will create a personalised learning plan based on your individual needs and goals. Whether you're struggling with essay writing, literary analysis, exam technique, revision planning, or a particular topic, lessons will be tailored to help you make progress. I also recognise that every student learns differently, so I take into account factors such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, processing difficulties, or exam-related anxiety when planning sessions and revision strategies.

What Lessons Look Like

Lessons are typically around one hour long, although longer sessions can be arranged if needed. My teaching style is supportive, interactive, and discussion-based, encouraging students to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop confidence in their abilities. I aim to create a welcoming environment where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process and students feel comfortable working at their own pace.

My Teaching Experience

My approach has been shaped by a range of teaching and mentoring experiences. I am a qualified swimming instructor, have worked as a childminder, including supporting an autistic child, and have informally mentored fellow university students throughout their studies. I will also be serving as an official Student Mentor during my final year at university. These experiences have shown me that no two students learn in exactly the same way, and I strongly believe that building confidence is just as important as developing academic knowledge.
