About Joan
I look forward to bringing the breadth and depth of my experience in teaching college writing and literature to your students. After many years working as a full-time tenured faculty in an English department, I have much to share with you, including teaching all levels of English composition, critical thinking, literature, and the humanities. I have a PhD and master’s degree in comparative literature with an emphasis in American, modernist, French, African American, and classical literary texts. I have taught students of all ages and racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, in rural and urban academic settings. All of my teaching evaluations have emphasized my passion, dynamic teaching style, innovative approach, and knowledge about the curriculum. I have multiple years’ experience teaching all modes of delivery, including face-to-face, virtual, and correspondence. In short, I absolutely love teaching and have the background to make any student's experience rewarding, enriching, and transformative.

I approach all of my lessons with a dynamic style and use multiple learning modalities and platforms to keep students engaged. I strongly believe that the more students can become interested in the academic material the more they are likely to learn. My maintenance of academic rigor in aligning learning modules with student learning outcomes, along with accurate record keeping, will meet your highest standards. Your students will appreciate my prompt and in-depth responses to their draft essays and will be engaged in my dynamic, culturally and socially relevant classes. They include lecture, PowerPoint, whiteboard, social media, streaming, video, class discussion, workshops, and peer reviews. I have always taught to diverse student populations at multiple skill levels using various learning modalities. One of my favorite parts in teaching is helping students develop rhetorical strategies as they move from inquiry to well-researched essays. In teaching college reading and writing, I have drawn on lessons from my scholarship and instruction in the humanities and literature to help students develop their analytic, evaluative, and problem-solving skills and to facilitate their thinking about ethics and civic engagement in their readings and writings. Particularly students of this new generation, immersed in social media, will benefit from my ability to contextualize their critical reflections about their world in a rapidly changing technological environment. Overall, I use a student-centered approach that fosters student success
