About Melanie
An experienced academic writing coach, l have taught English A Level and GCSE and led the teaching teams for these courses in UK Sixth Form Colleges for over 20 years. I hold the NPQLL (National Professional Qualification in Leading Literacy) and have the strategic expertise to design and implement programmes across an institution, which I will bring to design and manage your bespoke study programme outside the classroom, if you so wish, although previous students have also described my approach as 'flexible' and responsive to your needs as they arise.
I offer expertise in literature, combined language & literature, language, creative writing and Journalism; I advise on academic writing projects (especially for A Level and IB), crafting applications for undergraduate degree courses at competitive UK Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, and advise on prestigious essay competitions such as the Orwell Youth Prize and the John Locke Prize.
As an expert in English A Levels, l am also very conversant with International versions of these qualifications - the IAL and CAIE - and enjoy coaching students in England and those enjoying an elite English education overseas.
After my undergraduate degree at UCL, my first job was with the world's oldest Literary Agency, A P Watt in central London, so I know the commercial value of great writing and love to coach students to develop their own brilliant academic writing. My experience of founding Creative Writing and Journalism qualifications in a Sixth Form college will also aid your writing development, whether for academic or commercial purposes.
Please note that I give you the tools and the process to develop your thoughts and style; your writing is entirely your own. In the age of AI, I mentor on ensuring and demonstrating your genuine human authorship and that your work is compliant with exam board/JCQ AI regulations, which gives us all peace of mind.
Throughout my teaching career, I've examined for the 'Big Four' UK exam boards (who quality assured the precision of my examining as 'high level'). This means that I help you with your assessment literacy, so you learn to think like an examiner and know exactly how marks are awarded. I'm also a member of The Assessment Network at Cambridge, and I'm studying assessment theory with them, so you benefit from both my practical experience of examining and the theory behind it.
I've authored 13 educational resources with Zigzag Education, including a guide to Essay Writing Skills, which are tailored to specific exam board requirements and are popular with many schools and colleges nationally and worldwide, so there's a good chance you've already used my materials in your classroom!
