About Michael
Hello, my name is Michael Pfirrmann-Pugh. I am almost finished with my first year at the University of California, Riverside as an English Ph.D. student. I also hold a Master's in English and Comparative Literature from San Jose State University. Along with those advanced degrees I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Gender and African American Studies with a Minor in English from the University of California, Los Angeles. Much of my coursework there was informed by Literature and English. Finally, I hold Associate of Arts degrees in English and Women's Studies from Cerritos Community College in Norwalk, CA.
I have been a tutor in the Undergraduate Writing Center, while I was a student at UCLA. I have been an Adjunct or Part-Time Professor of English Composition as well as done other forms of Tutoring work. Teaching is something I am passionate about and I hope that I can help you with whatever needs you have within the subject of English Composition or Literature.

Tutoring for me is all about collaborative efforts, which is something I learned when I worked as a Tutor at UCLA. Lessons begin with a wellness check-in. I ask the student how their day and week is going. Afterward, I begin with questions like, "So, what do you want to focus on?"," What is the assignment?", "or What do you feel is something you're struggling with?" I find that these questions are generative and allow the student to assess in real time what they need the most assistance with.
The remainder of the time is dedicated to whatever issue they have discussed with me. For example. If a student has a paper they want to work on about The Odyssey and they don't know where to begin. I would ask them what the parameters of the assignment are like page length, what are the expectations of the teacher or professor, etc. Afterward, I would ask what are some key themes that you are interested in. Let's say they liked the idea of hospitality. I would then ask them a) where in the text we see that most vividly either good or bad hospitality and then b) how would they formulate an argument about it. Maybe they could conduct a compare and contrast essay about it. Either way, it's something to be explored through our time together.
