About Bethany
My education includes a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from Dartmouth College and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas, plus years of ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
I taught high school English in U.S. boarding schools for ten years, usually around a seminar table, where my students and I discussed and debated the nuances of literature and strategies for effective writing.
I began tutoring privately in 2013, working with students in elementary, middle, and high school as well as with adult students who were pursuing individual writing projects, taking college classes, or mastering English as a second language. I've taught SAT classes at several learning centers, coached students in executive function and study skills, and helped students with learning differences reach their potential.
From 2017-2023, I taught Humanities and Latin at a tiny private school, where I taught students in grades 3-8 and also directed annual Shakespeare plays. At this school, I incorporated extensive project-based learning and differentiated instruction for a wide range of learners.
I love reading, writing fiction, traveling, knitting, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. I look forward to learning about you too!

I've taught literature and writing courses in U.S. private schools since 2002, and my specialties include literature of all kinds (children's/YA, classics, Shakespeare, modern fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction), creative and academic writing, grammar and vocabulary instruction, and prep for the English section of the SAT.
While I create a template for every lesson, which could include discussion questions, writing exercises, close reading practice, or sample test questions, YOU as the student play a crucial role in the success of each lesson. I will teach you reading and annotation techniques so that you'll come to class full of questions and comments about what you read, and your questions will always be our starting point. We are here to develop YOUR critical thinking, creativity, and skills.
I am happy to work with students in grades 3-12 with a wide range of needs. I especially enjoy designing full courses for motivated homeschool students, mentoring students who want to pursue reading and writing projects, and coaching students who are working toward a particular goal (success on the SAT, fine-tuning a college essay, mastering grammar, or bringing up their grades in their school courses).
I encourage all students in grades 3-12 to reach out and schedule an initial session. I can't wait to work with you!
