About Maria-Irina

Hi! I’m Irina, a writer, playwright, theatre-maker and educator based in Leicester, England. I have a PhD in Literature and an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, and I have several years of experience teaching undergraduate students, leading seminars, facilitating workshops and creating inclusive learning environments.

I’m passionate about helping people become more confident communicators and discover their own voice. My teaching style is friendly, supportive and student-centred: I like to adapt lessons to each learner’s goals, interests and level, while making sure learning feels practical, engaging and enjoyable. My experience in writing, theatre and public engagement also means I love using stories, conversation and creative exercises to make language and ideas come alive.

Outside teaching, I’m an award-winning writer and playwright, and I direct and develop theatre productions in Leicester. I’m particularly interested in literature, storytelling, culture, identity, migration and the arts. I also enjoy going to the theatre, reading, writing, discovering new ideas and meeting people from different backgrounds. I’d love to help you build your confidence, improve your communication skills and enjoy the process of learning!

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is friendly, supportive and personalised. I believe you learn best when you feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing your own voice, so I create a relaxed and encouraging environment where you can learn without pressure. I incorporate critical thinking in all lessons.

I adapt each lesson to your individual goals, level and interests. Depending on what you want to achieve, we might work through conversation exercises, reading and close analysis of texts, vocabulary and grammar, academic or creative writing, or practical activities designed to build confidence in expressing your ideas. I particularly enjoy using stories, discussion and creative exercises to make lessons engaging and memorable.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although I can adapt the structure depending on your needs and goals. In a first lesson, we can discuss what you would like to achieve, identify your strengths and areas for development, and create a clear plan for future sessions.

I have a PhD in Literature, an MA in Literature with Distinction, and a First-Class BA in Literature & Art History. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have experience teaching undergraduate students, delivering seminars, facilitating workshops and supporting inclusive learning environments.

Alongside teaching, I am a professional writer, playwright and theatre-maker, which gives me particular expertise in English, literature, academic writing, creative writing, storytelling and communication.

My lessons are suitable for teenagers and adults, from learners who want to build their confidence in English to more advanced students interested in literature, academic writing or creative writing. Whatever your starting point, we can work together to make your learning practical, enjoyable and focused on your goals.
