About Eli

I am a writer, editor, and professional project manager with a master's degree in literary studies. I achieved straight A's throughout both of my degrees while acting as a teaching assistant, grading assistant, and research assistant. Whether you have no idea where to start when writing an essay, or want to just fine-tune your work, I can help you say what you're really trying to say or nail down the basics.

My hands on, creative tutoring style makes writing, literature, and the English language more approachable and less intimidating. The structure is very flexible; I encourage students to bring any work they're struggling with to me so that we can work through problems together. I aim to approach subjects from as many angles as possible and bring along resources that will make learning more painless, fun, and engaging. My tutoring caters especially to high school and undergraduate students, but learners of all levels are welcome!

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I've always been interested in and had a natural facility for language, storytelling, and expression, but middle school was when I learned that you could study these things under the heading of "English" and really started pursuing it as not just a personal interest, but also something to learn all the ins and outs of in order to more easily navigate the world.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

To me, language is the most important tool we use every day. Without language, we can't understand each other, share ideas, express ourselves, or get a point across. The way I see it, language makes the world go around. English just happens to be my native one.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring allows me to help people use language effectively in a way where I can more fully understand the challenges that they face at a one-on-one level. It is an environment where I can learn someone's story and assist them in overcoming obstacles by going along with them as they pick up new skills. I think part of what makes me a good tutor is that I've faced many of these challenges as a student over the years and developed strategies for making certain ideas or subjects more relevant and interesting to myself that I can then apply to the learning experience of others.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

All throughout high school and university I've had a few teachers (especially in art or lanaguage classes) who really knew how to motivate students and make course material more engaging by connecting concepts and skills to real life. They all brought a personal, creative touch to their teaching style and were invested in not just criteria dictated by the board they worked for, but also in judging success and relevance by the student's responses and concerns.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys for success are translating concepts, processes, and skills into the student's own terms so that even the most complicated and intimidating curriculum becomes familiar, as well as stimulating as many different parts of the mind as possible by taking a diverse, multifacted approach to all types of problems and material. If I can collaborate with a student to answer the question "Why should this matter to me?" and offer them options that are compatible with how they learn, then I've already succeeded in teaching them something very important.
