About Benjamin
I graduated from the University of York with a First-level Bachelor's in English Literature. I subsequently obtained a 2:1-level Bachelor's in Modern & Contemporary Literature.
I have long had a great interest and passion in literature of all forms, ages and genre. I consider myself to be just as home with the plays of Shakespeare as I am with postmodernist literature. During my two English courses, for instance, I wrote successful essays on such diverse works of literature as Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, Naguib Mahfouz's The Children of Our Alley, William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden, Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey, Bram Stoker's Dracula, the sonnets of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and the short films of Kenneth Anger. I wrote my two dissertations on, respectively, the fairy tale Bluebeard and its relation to Jane Eyre and Rebecca, and the role of trauma in the novels and short stories of J. D. Salinger.
My recreational reading is similarly diverse. Over the past few months alone, for example, I have been taking an interest in 19th Century adventure fiction, film adaptation of Shakespeare's plays and autobiographical graphic novels.
On an interpersonal level, I am considered to be not only knowledgeable and perceptive but friendly, personable, laid back, welcoming and encouraging. I aim to take a real interest in my students and form a full understanding of their needs as individuals so that I can guide to them a fuller understanding of each literary work. As an example of this, I provided personal tutoring to my cousin on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and the poetry of John Keats, which she was able to cite when she was predicted an A* grade in English.
I also have a CELTA qualification in teaching English as a foreign language from British Study Centres. During this period, I had extensive experience in face-to-face tutoring. Here I was widely known for being an effective communicator who formed a strong rapport with my form group.

I graduated from the University of York with a first-level Bachelor's in English Literature and a subsequent Master's in Modern & Contemporary Literature. I am therefore both qualified and prepared to provide your child with the assistance they require to pass their GCSE or A-Level in English Literature with flying colours.
I generally aim for a student-focused approach in my teaching. I begin by identifying the issues the individual student is having with the particular text and then from that aim to provide them with personalised guidance. I aim to ask questions, provide them with fresh information, take them through close readings, and generally aim to open their eyes to new ways of looking at a text. Nonetheless, I view my role as ultimately a guide, whose job it is to help the student arrive at their own conclusions rather than to provide them ready-made for the student.
I also have a CELTA certificate from British Study Centres which qualifies me as a teacher of English as a foreign language. I am therefore qualified to teach English as a foreign language to all age groups who might require the assistance.
My structure here consists of a mixture of reading, writing, listening and discussion exercises aimed at increasing a student's understanding of certain concepts they might encounter in English. If necessary, I am willing to tailor the lessons for the particular purposes of each student (for instance, to help them in a specific job).
My average lessons are one hour in length although I can extend to two hours if desired.
