About Shane
As a PhD student in English and a Composition Instructor at University of Oregon, I professionally communicate with professors and experts in academic research and read with superb comprehension and turn that comprehension into excellent instruction for students.
I have extensive experience as a teacher and tutor across all age groups. After graduating with a BA in Literature from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2021, I served for one service year as a 7th Grade English and Math Tutor and 8th Grade ELA TA at Great Oaks Legacy Charter School in Newark, New Jersey. I then worked as a substitute teacher at Elk Grove Unified School District in Elk Grove, California for one year. Then I worked at Harrison Elementary in Cottage Grove, Oregon while receiving my Masters in English from University of Oregon. I started teaching WRI 121z - Composition at University of Oregon in 2024. In 2025, I completed my MA in English and continued into a PhD in English at University of Oregon, where I continue to work as a Composition Instructor and English Instructor.
I look forward to talking with anyone who is looking for university and academic tutoring in English, Writing, and Humanities.

As a tutor, I want to build relationships with students to evaluate their needs and effectively tutor with content and an approach that will maximize a student's learning and retention.
Typical lessons begin with a friendly introduction and warm-up, followed by a brief session recalling material and teaching new material. Then, students will practice with assistance, then transition to practice with limited assistance, but careful guidance. Sessions will conclude with review, reminders for outside practice, and a sneak peek at the next lesson so that students see the wider connection between lessons and material.
Lessons are primarily for any university students, 7th-12th grade students, or adults looking to add new skills to their arsenal. I am more than happy to work with K-6th grade students with parental communication.
Lessons with me are unique because I have experience teaching across almost every age, and plan to continue teaching at the university level through my PhD program. My experiences teaching and in academia give me critical insight on the expectations and standards of excellent academic writing and reading.
