About Maya

I am a third year UCL Law student with a passion for languages. I am a native English and Dutch speaker confident tutoring English language; English literature GCSE; English literature IB SL; History GCSE; History IB SL; and beginner Dutch. I enjoy sharing my interest in the subjects I teach and am flexible in order to focus on the learning methods of each individual student. I find a combination of engaging discussion to inspire students and careful adherence to the syllabus to be an efficient way of preparing for exams subjects, but am open to other approaches to suit other learning goals. I found this approach of tailoring my classes to be very effective in my role at CARIS Camden, where I volunteered to provide homework support for children in council-provided temporary accommodation. Here I had the opportunity to teach children aged 5-7 the skills they needed to complete their homework, including reading, basic maths, and other activities such as telling the time. Furthermore, this year I have had the opportunity to support first year students at UCL as a transition mentor. In this role I have also carefully adapted the programme to the students' needs, and provided them with academic advice, advice about extracurricular activities offered by the university, and advice about how to make the most of London. Finally, as a student receiving lessons online, and a transition mentor providing guidance online, I have had the opportunity to experience virtual learning and see which approaches are effective in an online setting. I hope to bring these experiences and skills with me to an online tutoring role.
