About Rachel
I am a General Social Sciences student completing my degree at Vanier cegep. My focus is in Sociology, and I am currently a research assistant on the project "Being Muslim in Cegep." Despite my current occupation with Social Science, English has always been one of my favourite subjects! I was previously in arts, media, and communications before switching, and I am passionate about activism, art, and literature. Additionally, I audited a "peer teaching" english class offered at Vanier last year, and have a semester's worth of experience with English tutoring.

My teaching methods largely depend on what the Tutee is struggling with, and what they hope to get out of our sessions. For help with essay writing, I will first first focus on the ability to identify a theme and write a thesis statement, using poems and short stories aligned with the Tutee's own interests. I'll encourage the use of outlines and brainstorms, teaching the tutee how to break down a large task like an essay into a series of smaller, achievable steps. I will teach the Tutee how to identify and analyze literary elements, and finally, I'll help polish their style of writing. I will focus on teaching the Tutee the skills necessary to do it by themselves, emphasizing the development of their own voice, interpretations, and ability. The goal is not only to help the Tutee write a good essay, but to show them the often self-reflective joys of reading and analyzing literature.
