About Drew

I'm an academic, writer, composer and keen educator with 25 years+ of tutoring experience. I cover all the syllabuses - AQA, Edexcel I/GCSE, OCR, Eduqas, CIE IGCSE etc. I'm particularly expert on A levels and Shakespeare, but everything from Chaucer to contemporary literature is grist to my mill. If you're a bit stumped by any particular text, we can focus on it and make it one of your strengths. At A Level, you need to know about context, critics, essay structure and - most often neglected - how to show your individual appreciation of a writer’s literary or dramatic technique. Together we can increase your confidence in all these areas, gain deeper insights, and help you clarify your own arguments and articulate your ideas. At I/GCSE and in school entrance exams, it’s all about showing comprehension - especially of what is implied, rather than stated explicitly, having the vocabulary to do so, and writing with clarity and impact. I have also taken students through exams independently (for example if you have left school, but want to retake the English Literature A-level to get that A* grade. Should you be considering applying to study Literature at Oxford or Cambridge, I can show you how to approach analysing & appreciating unseens. I have helped students with the Westminster Challenge & with 13+ entrance to other leading schools. If you wish to share the cost of tuition with another student or students you know by scheduling a group class (slightly more expensive - £75 ph, but it is divvied up!) , that's possible, just drop me a line. Should you come to my house for tuition, the cost is the same as online. If anything in the above speaks to your needs, please get in touch! I also teach Music A Level I look forward to hearing from you! - Andrew (PS, you may notice from my qualifications that I only got an A at A level in English - this was before A*s were introduced to combat grade inflation!) University : - University of Cambridge - English [2:1] - Royal College of Music - DMus. [N/A] School : 3 A Levels - English Literature [A] - Music [A] Prizes and Scholarships : Cobbett and Hurlstone Composition Prize (RCM)

Deepen your comprehension of English language and your insights into Literary texts and the contexts in which they were written. Strengthen your arguments, enhance the impact of your essays, sentence structure and phrasing. English Literature is to be ENJOYED - in exams it helps to show that YOU enjoy it, as we will in our lessons. Even Shakespearean tragedy has comedy in the mix (less in 'Macbeth', admittedly, though the Porter's part contains the original of all those 'Knock knock' jokes).

  • When did you develop an interest a) in your chosen field and b) in private tutoring?

    A) Since I started to read. B) I took up tutoring initially to make a little dinero on the side whilst studying for a doc., then found I enjoyed it and would miss it very greatly were I to stop.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Teaching English language GCSE is absolutely fine - usually, of course, one does it together with GCSE Literature, but why pretend that Literature isn't more fun? Although I always read widely, I have to confess that I didn't love Shakespeare when I was at school - I'm sure for students today too, hearing it read through in class by the less involved classmates is a bit of a killer.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had one, a Mr Casson, an English teacher at Devonport High School for Boys, who used to let me mark my own essays. Those were the days! (Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned his name?)
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Expertise, Enthusiasm, Empathy (please note the alliteration) and as far as English Literature goes, delivering something substantial to get your teeth into when some school teachers (only some!) offer hot air (as if their students won't tell!). Far better is the usual scenario where a tutor is working in step to supplement and support the teaching in school!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school

Probably not valuable, just nostalgic. I got off rugby (my least favourite sport - sorry!) by taking on the school library, cataloguing and shelving books by 'Dewey' numbers - American Literature 810, English Literature 821…
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

There are some authors (only some, mind) I don't like. But generally the great joy of teaching real literature - especially to a keen student - is that you learn more and more things yourself. I sometimes discover books, I might not have were I not teaching various syllabuses. Examples? Well, I was very pleased to get know Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun and Jack Kerouac's On the Road, just to name two.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Writing - and encouraging writerly creativity in students (yes, in exam-style essays too!).
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I think I've learnt it from having some very good students.
