About Adam
A former police officer turned teacher. Originally from Manchester, I was the fifth person in my school’s history to achieve a place at the University of Cambridge. I read Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, an interdisciplinary course which examined the history, languages and literature of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. I specialised in Old English and Old Norse, and honed my skills in language, literature, history, and philosophy.
Working in the Metropolitan Police Service I was chosen as second in command of a special investigation unit. It was High pressure role where I commanded efforts to find wanted suspects across the country. I organised and balanced high-pressure projects under the scrutiny of the borough senior leadership, undertaking intense research, managing resources and specialised units, and commanding operations to apprehend suspects.
I left the police in order to try to tackle social and educational inequality. I spent some time as an events coordinator at the British Museum, working closely with curators and corporate sponsors to arrange opening events around the museum’s high-profile exhibitions, before training to be a teacher.

I have taught with Adam Kirton for three years. I am enormously indebted to him, as i have been able to benefit from his extensive knowledge and passion for the history and evolution of the English language. I have also been lucky to participate in his vision for his students. He is dedicated to embedding contemporary learning with a knowledge of the essential classical literature that informs it. He remains an inspirational educator that aspires to give students the tools to love the texts that they study, essential in light of Ofsted's mandate for students to "know more, and remember more". He has successfully taught at all key stages, and would be a welcome addition to a school team or an individual student.
Adam Kirton is a hardworking, reliable, and thoughtful postgraduate student with a passion for learning and teaching who is currently pursuing his MA in Medieval Literature and Culture at Birkbeck, University of London. Since meeting Adam in September last year I have taught Adam on four modules, and have had the benefit of Adam’s feedback in his role as student representative in Staff-Student Liaison Forum meetings, in which he has communicated the responses and queries of his fellow students to the teaching team. Adam has performed consistently well in class and in assignments. He is a supportive, well-read student who is keen to contribute, but who is also considerate of his classmates, facilitating as well as leading discussion. Adam’s preparation for tutorials and classwork assignments has been consistently thorough throughout his time at Birkbeck. He communicates effectively on paper and in person, and has a principled approach to his studies and his professional life. I am very pleased to have Adam as a student on the course, and would be equally happy to work with him in a professional capacity. I commend him to you with confidence.
