About Harry

When I was 8 years old my mother sat me down and explained to me that one cannot really be educated unless one knows Latin and Greek. While I now understand that this is a somewhat narrow view of education, I have never questioned the value of the classics for the development of the intellect and the edification of the soul. From that tender age, my mother took it upon herself, a seasoned classicist, to teach me, and I have been a most diligent student since. While I did decide to study English literature in college, and am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree, my study of Greek and Latin never wavered and I have had a passion for those literatures in addition to English for as long as I can remember. Finally, my father is a native Greek, so I learned Modern Greek at home growing up, speak it fluently, and am able to teach it effectively as I have done so in the past.

About the lesson

The ancient bards of Ireland had to be fluent in and be able to compose poetry in Irish, Greek, and Latin. While I am unable to teach Irish, my nearly 15 years of experience in Ancient Greek and Latin enable me to provide the prospective classicist with both an easy introduction to the languages of the two most important European civilizations as well as a deeper understanding of their culture and literature, and the intricacies of their languages. I believe in a natural teaching method, adapted to the learner, where grammar is introduced slowly through speech and literature, the end goal of which is for the learner to acquire a comfortable fluency. I make use of a great variety of textbooks but I don't require you to purchase them as I have my own method. What makes me different from most other classics teachers is that I do not enforce rote learning and place a great emphasis on pronunciation and composition. The typical lesson would be about an hour and can be extended depending on the student's needs. I can teach Latin for Leaving Cert, for academic interest, as well as teach the basics of modern Greek for use when traveling.
