About Megan
I’m Megan, a kindergarten teacher, located just outside of Boston. I’m currently in my eighth year of teaching, with prior experience teaching second grade in New York City. I hold a master’s degree in teaching early childhood and childhood education, and I’m passionate about creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for my students. When I’m not in the classroom, I’m in the pool! Swimming has always been a big part of my life, and in addition to enjoying the sport, I also coach and lead my own swim team during the summer months. Whether it’s through teaching or coaching, I love helping kids build confidence, perseverance, and a passion for learning—both in school and in sports.

Teaching Method and Techniques My teaching approach is rooted in a student-centered philosophy, where I focus on individual strengths and needs. I use a multi-sensory approach, integrating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods to engage students. I incorporate techniques such as: -Phonics-based instruction to build reading skills, helping students decode unfamiliar words. -Guided reading to foster fluency and comprehension through leveled texts. -Interactive writing exercises that promote creativity and proper structure. -Differentiation, tailoring activities and pacing to meet the student’s current abilities. -I emphasize positive reinforcement, creating a safe and encouraging space for students to build confidence and take risks. I also focus on making lessons fun by integrating games, storytelling, and real-world applications of literacy skills. Typical Lesson Plan Warm-up (5-10 minutes): Begin with a quick review or mini-game to engage the student and get them comfortable. This could be a phonics warm-up or a quick check-in on writing progress. Target Skill Focus (15-20 minutes): Teach a specific reading or writing concept—e.g., blending sounds, identifying sight words, practicing sentence formation, or exploring narrative structure. Guided Practice (15-20 minutes): Work through exercises together. For reading, this might involve reading a passage aloud and discussing it. For writing, we might draft a story or work on editing. Independent Practice (5-10 minutes): Give students a chance to practice what they’ve learned on their own, whether reading a new text or writing a short paragraph. Wrap-up (5 minutes): Review the lesson’s key points, celebrate progress, and give feedback. Set a mini goal for the next session to keep students motivated. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor What sets me apart is my ability to personalize each lesson to meet the specific needs of my students. I use ongoing assessments to adapt my lessons dynamically, ensuring that students progress at their own pace. I bring a nurturing, patient attitude, creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. Additionally, my background as a coach in swimming has given me the ability to work with students on building perseverance and confidence, essential traits for success in reading and writing. Who the Lessons Are For These lessons are designed for students of all levels, ranging from early readers (grades K-3) to older students who may need support with foundational literacy skills. Whether students need extra help with phonics, fluency, writing structure, or overall comprehension, I’m equipped to support them. These lessons can be tailored to students with varying needs, including those who are learning English as a second language or students with learning differences who may need more individualized strategies.
