About Emily
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing, as well as an MBA, and I recently passed the Praxis English Language Arts: Content and Analysis exam. My classroom experience includes serving as the long-term substitute teacher for a sixth-grade English Language Arts class, where I independently planned and delivered lessons, assessed student work, and communicated regularly with families and school staff.
Before entering education, I spent more than ten years in marketing and communications, where clear writing, careful editing, and dependable project management were essential to my work. Students and families can expect me to be prepared, patient, encouraging, and respectful of their time. I take each student’s goals seriously and strive to create a comfortable learning environment where questions are welcomed and progress is recognized.

My tutoring approach begins with the individual student—their interests, strengths, learning style, and the areas where they need more confidence. I use creative, relatable examples to make reading and writing skills feel approachable. A lesson on characterization might connect a literary text to a student’s interest in animals, while a challenging historical concept might become clearer through a familiar real-world analogy.
A typical lesson begins with an engaging question, image, story, or example that connects the topic to something the student already understands. From there, I introduce the core concept, model how to apply it, and guide the student through reading, discussion, annotation, or writing practice. I use questions and sentence starters to provide support when needed, but I also encourage students to form their own interpretations and defend them with specific evidence. Each session ends with a brief check for understanding and clear next steps.
What sets me apart is my combination of classroom teaching experience, a Literature degree, and more than ten years of professional experience communicating complex ideas clearly. I design lessons that are structured but flexible, and I give students meaningful choices in how they read, respond, and demonstrate what they have learned. My goal is not simply to complete an assignment, but to help each student become a stronger, more independent, and more confident reader and writer.
I work primarily with middle and high school students who need support with reading comprehension, literary analysis, essay writing, grammar, vocabulary, or general English Language Arts coursework. Lessons can be adapted for students who need extra scaffolding, students who are initially quiet or hesitant, and students looking for greater challenge.
