Hi there! I’m Abby, an experienced and creative ELA tutor currently serving as a Student Success Coach with City Year AmeriCorps. I help middle schoolers strengthen reading and writing skills through patient, personalized, and engaging lessons. My Tutoring Approach As a tutor, I focus on building both academic skills and student confidence. My method combines structured lesson planning with emotional intelligence, creating a space where students feel supported and motivated to learn. Teaching Methods & Techniques I use a student-centered approach that includes: Diagnostic assessments to identify strengths and areas for growth. Scaffolded reading and writing activities tailored to individual needs. Interactive discussions and guided practice to reinforce concepts. SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) strategies to boost confidence and focus. A standard 45-60 minute session might include: 1. Warm-up (5-10 min): Quick reading or writing prompt 2. Skill Focus (25-30 min): Main lesson based on ELA standards (e.g., comprehension, grammar, structure) 3. Application (10-15 min): Practice activity or creative writing task 4. Review & Reflect (5-10 min): Recap key takeaways and set goals What Sets Me Apart I bring experience from the classroom, working directly with sixth-grade students at Meridian PCS through City Year. My strengths lie in building meaningful student relationships, adapting to different learning styles, and blending academics with emotional support. I'm patient, positive, and proactive.
