About Jay

I am a Maths and Philosophy graduate from the University of York with over five years of tutoring experience. I’ve helped many GCSE students grow in confidence and improve their understanding of both English Language and Literature, developing the skills they need to succeed in their exams. English can sometimes feel subjective or challenging to get right, but my goal is to make it clear, structured, and approachable. I focus on helping students write with confidence — analysing texts effectively, planning essays clearly, and expressing their ideas with precision and style. Whether we’re working on creative writing, unseen poetry, or essay structure, I break tasks down step by step until students feel comfortable tackling them independently. My lessons are supportive, engaging, and tailored to each student’s goals. I aim not only to help students achieve excellent grades, but also to help them appreciate language, literature, and the power of communication beyond the exam. Qualifications & Experience: BSc Maths and Philosophy (2:1) – University of York A Level: Maths – A* Physics – A* GCSE: English Language – Grade 9 English Literature – Grade 8 Maths – Grade 9 Physics – Grade 9 5+ years of tutoring experience, supporting a wide range of GCSE students in both English Language and Literature.

About the lesson

I offer engaging, exam-focused English Language and Literature lessons for GCSE students. My approach combines clear explanation with detailed feedback and practical guidance to help students write with confidence, accuracy, and insight. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s goals — whether that’s improving essay structure, mastering textual analysis, or refining creative writing skills. In English Language, I focus on building strong writing technique, analytical skills, and understanding how to craft effective responses for both reading and writing papers. In English Literature, I help students explore texts in depth — developing interpretations, analysing themes and language, and linking ideas to context and exam requirements. Lessons include step-by-step essay practice, model answers, and targeted feedback to strengthen weaker areas. My goal is to make English both understandable and enjoyable, helping students gain the confidence and clarity needed to excel in their exams.
