About Polly

I am a kind, patient and excited tutor of English language and literature. My previous employer described me as a ‘life changing tutor’, and the best one he had hired for his sons in twenty years of working with tutors. I worked over Skype and in person.

I taught GCSE for one of the boys, who was resitting his exams for the second time (17).

I edited the novels, taught literature and language, did scholarship preparation, and ISEB preparation for the other (12). I was working to help Paul achieve scholarship level grades in the ISEB examination, I improved his extensive literary projects, and improved his accent. It was a rigorous set up, we worked for five hours a day, five days a week.

I would be more than happy to tutor Religious Studies (A Level or GCSE), History (GCSE), and to help with EPQs and university applications, as well as any English exam.

About the lesson

My lessons with the 12 year old included:
• Accent improvement by acting, reading challenging literature allowed, playing games that I made up such as tongue twisters and variations on Just a Minute.
• Critical reading and writing, improved by exams I created for him and extensive discussions of literature.
• Creative writing, improved by editing his work and providing feedback, reading other forms of literature, and teaching him new grammatical structures. I edited his novels, poems, and other forms of writing.
• I introduced him to various forms of literature, including the plays of Oscar Wilde, the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, King Lear, Lewis Carroll. A highlight was getting Paul to create his own ‘nonsense poetry’ in the style of Caroll’s The Jabberwocky.

With the 17 year old I focussed on acronyms and other easy-to-use methods to understand the GCSE English literature and language papers and pass them.
