About Lia

I’m Lia, an experienced English tutor, writing consultant, editor, mentor and tertiary-level educator. Language and writing are at the heart of my professional life, and I enjoy helping others discover that English does not have to feel intimidating or difficult.

I teach writing, copywriting, communication and presentation-related subjects at tertiary level and also work individually with school-age learners who need additional support with English. I am an ETDP SETA-accredited Facilitator, Assessor and Moderator, and my professional work as an editor and writing consultant has given me extensive practical experience in academic, corporate and professional writing.

What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing the moment when something that a student has been struggling with finally makes sense. I believe confidence grows through understanding, practice and having the freedom to ask questions without feeling embarrassed about getting something wrong.

I am patient, approachable and genuinely interested in getting to know the people I teach. Outside of teaching and writing, I’m an enthusiastic reader, particularly of crime and detective fiction, and I enjoy good food, interesting conversations and discovering new places.

About the lesson

My lessons are built around the individual learner. I start by finding out what you are comfortable with, where you are struggling and what you would like to achieve. From there, I tailor our lessons to your particular needs rather than working through a one-size-fits-all programme.

I teach in English and can help with reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, summarising, reasoning and general communication skills. I also work with students who want to improve their academic or professional writing.

A typical lesson combines explanation with practical activities and plenty of opportunity to ask questions. I am particularly interested in why a student is struggling with something. If you give me the wrong answer, we look at how you arrived at it. If you give me the right answer, I may ask you to explain your reasoning. This helps me identify gaps that aren't always obvious from the final answer alone.

My professional background as a writing consultant and editor also means that I bring practical, real-world language experience into my teaching.

Most importantly, my lessons are a space where you can ask questions, make mistakes and try again. My aim is to help you understand English better, become more confident in using it and develop skills that you can eventually use independently.
