About Jennifer

I have a degree in Journalism from Columbia College Chicago. And, although I’m not yet enrolled, I am looking to transfer my degree to a teaching certification for elementary school. Although I have neither a PhD nor a Master's Degree, I do have vast teaching experience that spans many decades.

For instance, prior to the COVID lockdowns, I was a professional belly dance instructor where I combined ancient history with music appreciation, movement and physical control. I did that for 15 years. Also, during my stint in college, I was a teacher’s aide for the photography department and I did a lot of tutoring with fellow classmates for things like journalistic pieces, writing assignments, proofreading, research, essay writing, grammar and ESL. Because Columbia College is considered something of an international school, I helped many students from places like India, Japan, Mexico, Spain, France and Germany.

About the lesson

There is a world of reading to explore and an art to good writing. Far too often, I find the public school system fails children on this. As such, it is my goal to provide a well-rounded education that's personalized and supportive of each student in my charge.

Inspiring and encouraging adults who understand children and the world in which they’re growing up are incredibly important to learning and development. Exposure to a wide variety of people not only helps them build character but also confidence. It is incredibly important for children to succeed in today's age. This is my ultimate purpose for being a tutor.

I've been tutoring children one-on-one for the last year and a half. We cover math, science, English, reading, writing, handwriting and phonics; including social studies, civics, classic literature, astronomy, geography and history. I help children navigate difficult instructions, make sense of confusing assignments (especially math) and give them the confidence to do these on their own. Upon the first lesson, I identify the child's learning style(s), evaluate the materials provided by their teacher(s) and come to a reasonable synthesis that blends these together for the child in a smooth and seamless way; with the goal of our sessions translating to the classroom.

My hope is to ensure children develop the necessary skills that will advance them to the next level. My purpose is NOT to grade them, but for them to UNDERSTAND the material. This means we use their schoolwork along with other activities, exercises and worksheets I provide for a more rounded experience and thorough grasp of the subject matter.

Details

For in-person tutoring, $10 travel fee is for locations just outside I-465. It will be an additional $10 per 10 miles outside that radius.
