About Sarah

I have been teaching English and Literature in Victorian Secondary Colleges for twenty years, and in that time have taught Year 11 English or a Year 12 English class most years, often both. I have also been a VCAA English exam assessor. I love teaching English because I love texts, novels, poetry, film, short stories. I love to read them, and I love to analyze them. Mostly I love to discuss big, serious, ideas like identity, power, justice and conflict. I love to talk about how texts help us see ourselves better and to examine the world we live in. I can help you with clear writing structures for analytical and creative responses and analytical paragraph and sentence structures that will improve your essays. I can help you dig deeper into the ideas and themes texts explore, using questioning techniques and building personal connections to texts that improve understanding and encourage you to develop your own interpretations. I can offer constructive and actionable feedback in a friendly and supportive environment that you can apply to improve your writing.

About the lesson

Let's arrange a first meeting (15-30mins) where we can get to know each other a little bit and discuss the areas you feel you need support and set some goals and objectives. We can also discuss the kind of lessons that will suit your individual learning needs. We can meet online in one hour weekly sessions and discuss ideas. Through talk we can brainstorm together, explore big ideas and themes more deeply, I can support you to make new connections between the texts, the world and yourself. We can plan responses to essay topics. We can discuss creative responses and different purposes, audiences and forms and how you might use these in your own writing. Through discussion and annotation I can support you to develop confidence in your own interpretations and comprehension of texts. I also offer written feedback with screencast video option. This is more focused on specific pieces of writing that you will send me and I can give detailed written feedback on your piece, using the criteria to show you areas where you can improve the piece based on ideas, relevance, structure, vocabulary, evidence, cohesion and fluency. In an accompanying screencast I will talk you through the feedback, offering further detail for improvement. This strategy has been helpful to past students as they were able to rewatch the feedback when applying it to future essays. We can also organize a combination of these two approaches. Lessons will be for one hour, are online only and aimed at Year 9-10 and VCE Year 11 and Year 12 English students. I am also available to tutor students in younger years levels.

I have had the pleasure of working closely with Sarah for five years at Keilor Downs College. In her role as literary coordinator, Sarah helped to shape the literary strategies for the English Department to improve students' reading and writing. She is an exceptional English teacher who genuinely cares about students and their learning. Sarah’s style of teaching is one that is both inclusive of diverse students and their needs. In her time at KDC she has developed positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the wider community.
