The Academy was started by a group of remarkable people who shared a vision of being a link between the people of Arizona and the people of Ireland. The Irish Government, among many others, has played a role in the development of the mission of this Irish-American community. The Academy, Cultural Center and Irish Library serves as the heart of the Arizona Celtic Community.

Our Teaching Artists bring great talent and years of experience to their work. Irish and Celtic music is about performance...in bands and many other musical settings. This music is played in community. The Irish Seisiún is a hallowed tradition, often held in pubs or other places where communities gather. Common tunes are learned and played together, which encourages proficiency as well as the likelihood of the tunes being passed down to subsequent generations. Our instructors are well known on the Irish music scene in Phoenix.

Students at the Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies are assessed and then guided by talented and experienced teaching Artists in the study of their chosen instrument, dance discipline or language. Whether at the level of novice, intermediate or advanced, teachers tailor each student's progress individually to attain goals for each term of study set jointly by student and teacher.

Teachers at the Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies have worked with students of all backgrounds and from all walks of life who share one thing....a passion for the culture of the Celts. Whether or not you claim Celtic blood, the Irish nation and its people have held a deep fascination for many people down through time, and many enjoy exploring this culture through the study of its music, dance, art, language, customs and religion.

We suggest consultation with the appropriate Academy faculty member in setting up a convenient lesson time or in finding out times when dance, art, drama or language classes are held. Counsel in purchasing an instrument is always recommended. Assessment and guidance will be done in lesson/class. Any questions regarding the suitability of a student for the course of study of interest can be accomplished prior to the start of the term by email.

The Academy participates in many Cultural events each year. From the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire each March to the literary event celebrating Irish author James Joyce each Bloomsday to the ritual observance of the Winter Solstice, the Celtic year is marked by traditional music, art, literature, dráma and dance, and Academy teachers and students are active participants in these occasions throughout the year.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Generally, students are expected to devote a reasonable amount of time to practice or assigned homework in their chosen area of study. Payment is expected in advance of lessons or classes taken. Please take into consideration that though various instruments, including voice and piano, are offered, all lessons and classes involve education in Irish and Celtic music, dance, art, literature, theatre and language. All subjects of study are taught from a uniquely cultural perspective.
