I talk to the student, and depending on the age of the student, their parent, about what they wish to accomplish tutoring with me. This could mean generalized homework help, help in a specific subject, or even SAT or ACT prep.
Most of the students I have tutored needed primarily homework help, so I started working with them on the homework. Here I try to assess the student's strengths and weaknesses and any mental blocks the student may have to grasping the material.
Lastly, I have the students try to set a goal for the tutoring. I believe that if the student themself is making a goal they are much more likely to stick with it.
