About Peanut

PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY DANCE CLASSES FOR KIDS (ages 3-9) teaches a “creative movement” approach to dance that sees dance as an art form to be explored, examined, responded to, created, and discovered. Learning a wide range of movements allows children to make their own dances and ‘own’ movement as dancers. Fostering the love of moving and dancing is a chief goal. We teach to the dancer/artist in every child. The activity and fun of dance develops the brain in new ways, teaches self-discipline and promotes self-confidence. It is our aim that with increasing experience, our students will make their dancing expressive and impressive.

I love to watch children grow and learn about this wonderful way to make dances.

I inherited a class at a community center from a friend and fell in love with teaching dance to children.



After graduating as a performance and choreography major, I have been teaching creative movement for children for 40+ years. I keep gaining knowledge, teaching techniques, and new material from many teacher workshops and conferences.

New children are gently incorporated into our classes. Parents may even sit with them in the opening circle, if neccessary. We explain the rules and then we start to move. Reluctant children are encouraged and cajoled, but we find that the activities are so much fun that they almost always join in and dance with us.



Our group works with children ages 3-9 exclusivley.



Young children need dance and movment classes because they have so little experience in the real world. They spend a great deal of time in containers: car seats, strollers, etc. They need classes that get them moving and enjoying the physical sensation of whole body movement and the mental engagement of solving dance 'problems' (ie how many ways can you get from here to there? walk, run, skip, etc.) This kind of class teaches dance and language literacy, mathmatical thinking, and problem solving.



Our oldest children just did a community festival where they danced in an old arcade style mall, back and forth between the facing store fronts. Parts of the dance incorporated many wrapped boxes and even a large washing machine box wrapped like a present that they danced inside and outside of!

Details

We run in 10 week sessions. Each session is priced at ~$200, depending on age and class length. There is a prorated tuition for late-starting students.
