About Antoinette

Hi my name is Antoinette. I am new at this on a professional level but I taught my daughter to read at an early age. By the age of 4 she could read all of Dr. Suess's Books. I love to read. Reading can take you anywhere in the world and you never have to leave home. Reading opens up a whole new world to you.

My enjoyment comes from seeing a person learn to read or to see them make improvements in their reading.

Started working as a Substitute Teacher in an elementary and high school in 2017.

I have a Masters Degree in Education from Suny Potsdam.

1.  Assess reading level

2.  Begin with words and sounds

3.  Help student to recognize words

4.  Use words in sentences and stories

5.  Encourage daily reading in their areas of interest

In the past, I worked at an Adolescent Psychiatric Residential Treatment Program for students 11-21 years of age with severe emotional trauma, aggressive behaviors, conduct disorder, those who lacked coping and anger management skills.

While credentials and experience has its place when deciding upon which applicant is best to hire.  Also consider the character of that individual.

The students that I worked with always called me their "favorite substitute."  They all said the same thing.  They described me as a person who inspired them, who they believed truly cared for them, and who was always down to earth.  I believe children want to see the real you.  One must always be professional but you must also allow your natural personality to show through....the authentic you.

As a Substitute Teacher, my first long-term sub assignment was working with a 5th grader named Alex.  His diagnosis was Autism.  He was very intelligent, spoke very clearly and seemed to have everything going for him. He expressed his sensitivity to certain textures and of not wanting to speak out in public.

Every chance I got, I would challenge him with speaking out in class but time and time again he refused.  One day near the end of the school year, the teacher made an annoucement that students had to return their books to the library before the last day of school.  Alex began explaining to me why he couldn't return his book and I told him to raise his hand and explain to the teacher what he had told me.  Alex hands went up, but the teacher was looking somewhere else.  I said to the teacher, "Mr. (  ) Alex has something to say."  Everyone in the class was astounded and so was I.  That was a very happy moment for me.  It took me exactly 6 weeks of constant encouragement and a little harassment to get Alex to speak out in public. That one incident gave him the confidence to do it over and over again.  Alex is now speaking out in class and it feels good to know that I played an integral part in his transformation.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1.  What is the simplest way to express my needs to my teacher?

2.  Do I make a written list or do I say it verbally?
