About Emma

Hi! My name is Emma and I am a recent graduate of DePaul University. I have a BFA in playwriting, graduated Magna Sum Laude, and am the recipient of The Theatre School at DePaul's dean's prize.

I have experience writing and editing essays on the subjects of theatre, performing arts, and culture. My specialty is personal narrative--any thing about you ex. college essays, artist statements. and cover letters!

Alongside playwriting, I work in theatre as a dramaturg. Dramaturgs are traditionally expected to provide historical and contextual research for a play, but the role is often much greater. As a dramaturg, I read and evaluat scripts for theatre companies, compile research packets, and work one-on-one with playwrights to help develop their work. I dramaturges nine productions at DePaul, seven of which were new plays. I have also assisted on productions at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and The Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

I have a BFA in playwriting from The Theatre School at DePaul University, where I took classes in dramatic criticism, copyediting, and new play dramaturgy. I graduated Magna Cum Laude.

I also attended a New Play Dramaturgy Intensive at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and have interned at the Goodman Theatre and Ashland New Plays Festival.

About the lesson

I like to get to know a writer first before I say anything about their work. I believe the most important part of working with a student is listening. Once I understand a students goals for a project, then I start asking questions. I make sure to tell the student what they're doing well before I give more extensive feedback.

Take risks with your writing. The more attempted drafts, the better the final product.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's important to know a tutor's feedback style. Some people will tell you exactly what to do amd how to do it. I believe it's important to show suppourt and encouragement in the feedback process. I work to make sure a student leaves more confident than they were when we started!
