About Katie

Who doesn't love when the lightbulb goes off and a new concept finally clicks?! This is especially true in language where all of a sudden you can communicate more effectively - or much more easily get the grade you're hoping for! I pride myself on creating a comfortable environment so that you'll feel at ease learning new concepts and truly acquiring new languge skills in French or English. We all have different motivations, backgrounds and goals. I'll take the time learn your specific motivations, background and goals to succeed, and with luck have some fun doing it. Learning a new language and improving grammar, comprehension and pronunciation take time, but meeting consistently allows the student, young or old, to walk away with multiple learning moments and new skills.

First, I enjoy people. Second, I love language. I take the time to get to know my students and their interests to more easily create activites relevant to the learner. This also helps ensure the skills you are learning can be used right away, whether in class or the real world! With a real passion for language I'm always learning new teaching concepts myself, allowing me to constantly create new lessons and techniques so that understanding tricky skills becomes easier for the learner. Teaching French and ESL gives me daily joy as I immerse myself in my own memories learning French as a young girl, traveling and living abroad and communicating in a second language.

I have tutored over 9 years in French and ESL, having gained a French teaching certification and a Masters in Applied Linguistics/TESOL. These degrees work strongly together, and the epxerience I have gained in teaching, tutoring and studying teaching methods, language rules and basic education pedagogy all play an important role to help in tutoring efficiently and effectively.

About the lesson

After an initial meeting I usually perform a basic assessment, which may be verbal or written depending on the student and the subject matter. Once knowing a student's level, learning process and goals it's much easier to create activities based on the specific student. I always come prepared with games, flash cards, extra materials, videos, etc. so that we can make the most out of the time together, whether in person or online. Making sure the student has time to think and respond, as well as to ask questions regarding the current lesson or in general, is very important, and I always make time to give and receive feedback as appropriate.

You will want to make sure the teacher knows the subject matter to the fullest, whether the French language or ESL, and you'll also want to make sure the teacher has experience in language education. Often, however, the greatest advantage will be your relationship with the teacher, and this usually requires a face to face (in person or online) meeting to see if you're a good fit.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure the teacher knows what you are working on in school or hope to learn and improve in your real world experience with the langauge. It is up to the teacher to assess your level and understand where you need the most technical help, but you can help yourself and the tutor immensely by asking questions and advising where you know you specifically need and want extra help. While it's up to the teacher to put in the effort to create the best learning environment and experience for each session, it's up to you to let the teacher know what activities you like and work best for your learning, and which concepts you struggle with outside of the tutoring session. The more information you can provide in advance, the more the teacher can prepare for you.

I generally have an hourly rate of per student, but this is negotiable depending on how much work is needed to create a perfect lesson to make the most out of the tutoring session. For people that want simple conversation practice, for example, my hourly rate will often be less, as will online lessons. For students looking for continuous lessons, I usually provide a free first session for assessment purposes and to make sure I'm a good fit with the student.
