About Kenny

1. How do you stand out?

I’ve become “every teacher” for every student. I hold both a multiple subject and single subject (English) credential. I’ve taught everything from fourth grade up to Freshman Composition for three years as an adjunct English professor at a community college. Over the years, I’ve amassed a number of best practices and teaching strategies to adaptively respond to each student’s unique and specific learning needs.

2. Write about your passion for your services and how you will help students achieve their goals.

I truly believe that every child can learn. It is a fundamental, universal human right for a child to receive the best care and instruction that a teacher can provide. That said, one of the most important things that I establish up front -- besides mutuality and respect for one another -- is a clear diagnostic understanding of the student’s academic capabilities as well as their learning gaps. After getting a clear sense of where their abilities lie, I develop a scope and sequence that details the prerequisite skills that the student needs to be taught in order to fill those gaps, identified during the diagnosis. From there, I create/curate materials and learning opportunities that develop the student’s skills towards mastery.

3. Tell about your experience. How long you have been doing this and where?

I am in my 12th year as an educator. I began my career as an Americorp volunteer in 2007, joining Teach For America, an exclusive internship/partnership that places recent college graduates in urban settings that have historically high teacher turnover and lower--than-average standardized testing scores. Over the years, I’ve taught full-time English and History in middle schools in and around East and South Los Angeles. I stepped away from full-time teaching for three years and taught as an adjunct English professor at Santa Monica College. Additionally, I have 6 years of tutoring experience through MAC Systems and other private tutoring opportunities.

4. List your qualifications, certifications, accomplishments and awards.

I possess a valid, clear multiple-subjects credential with a supplementary single-subject credential to teach secondary English Language Arts. I also have an MAT in education through Loyola Marymount University. Also, I have been nominated twice in the last four years to receive the Carol D. Bradley award for teaching excellence through the KIPP foundation.

Simply put, I enjoy working with students and their families. The curation and creation of materials, correcting and providing feedback for student work, recording and data tracking student achievement, and reporting findings to parents pales in comparison to the trusting bond that is formed between each of the stakeholders. Taking a student who has lost or has never found her confidence in a particular subject to becoming one who fluidly comprehends or confidently applies learned skills in new situations is truly the most rewarding experience.
