About Charles

I have multiple college degrees, including a master's degree in business. I have a TEFL teaching certificate from the University of Toronto, and I specialized in teaching Business English and English to young or beginning learners. With this background, I understand the expectations of higher learning, how to study, and how to take exams. This skill is transferable and I am willing to help students succeed.

As a tutor, it excites me to lift people to their highest self, to give people a chance at a better life, and to help people learn how to help themselves.

My tutoring experience started in college when I was blessed with the unique opportunity to spend a semester with students from all over the world.  It was more of a collaborative effort whereby small groups of people shared their language and favorite phrases with other students in the group.  In the process, we all had the opportunity to teach and learn from each other.

I am a certificated English Foreign Language ( EFL ) teacher and consultant.  I received my TEFL Certificate at the University of Toronto.  My highest level of education is a Master's Degree in Business ( MBA ).  An MBA requires intense and concise writing.  My career in telecommunications required the same.  Writing well is not a luxury, it is a necessity, and I believe my education and experience will prove valuable as I mentor others while they learn to improve their English language skills.

For new students, I begin the process by getting to know them.  I ask their names and have them tell me something fun about themselves or about their hobbies.  I also ask students to describe why they need a tutor, and what they hope to gain from my help.   I apply the information to future lessons in order to make each one as efficient and relative as possible.

I can tutor either by letting the student inform the process based on their perceived needs or by using a Needs Analysis to determine the student's current level of English competency.  When a student informs the process, I focus on areas directed by the student.  When a Needs Analysis informs the process, I focus on the student's weakest areas.  Either way, I use Dr. Krashen's input + 1 method to teach at and slightly above the learner's current competency level.

Ultimately, as a tutor, I am here to serve and support the student in a way that builds confidence and self-esteem while using English either as a foreign language, a second language, or as a native language.  My job is to help students bridge the gap between where they are currently and where they want to be.

Look for teachers who are willing to serve, present themselves well, provide a calm learning environment, are willing to teach at the student's current level using a variety of modalities, and have qualifications in the needed subject area.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should never feel intimidated to ask questions or to talk to their teachers about their needs.  However, students should think about their needs and goals prior to paying for help. Doing so will help the student identify the objectives and bring clarity as to where you are, where you want to be, how you will know when you get there, and why it is important.

My goal is to lift all people to their highest potential.  With that, I charge a reasonable rate of $25 an hour so that more students feel encouraged to seek tutoring.  I am willing to teach individuals or small groups that want to share the fee.
