About Deborah

I have more than 20 years of experience as a journalism and English teacher at the high school and college levels; have conducted numerous workshops at the university of Virginia, Amherst College,Ohio University, and Columbia University. Most recently Ihaveworked as a tutor, helping students with AP courses in English and history, assisting with writing applications, and helping students to write with more flexibility and confidence.

About the lesson

First I want to be "on target" with the student. When a student chooses to work with a tutor, the student has identified a specific area that needs to be strengthened. My field (English) is certainly a broad one. Generally I conduct several simple assessments and ask to see the student's work so that I can be helpful. Then the student and I map out together the goals and timelines as well as creating progress notes.

The student has to be a part of the process. I can generally anticipate what will be asked of the student on tests and essays and help the student to meet the criteria. It's important to me that students develop skills that make learning easier and more satisifying.
