About Yessenia

I'm currently attending UC San Diego, pursing a double major in Human Biology & Global Health. Although I have an affinity for science and pre-med, I've learned throughout my short life many people aren't good at articuting their words/thoughts. Comprehensive reading & writing go hand in hand with science; therefore it's a skill I've learned to master. But my mastery in writing is not simply due to necessity, it has always been something I'm good at. I hope to convince people there is great power in learning to express one's beliefs/thoughts/ideas through words & it doesn't have to be a dreadful never ending experience--as many feel it is.

This would be the first time "professionally" calling myself a tutor; I have always been the one to help my peers/family in high school/college with their writing assignments. It never occurred to me that I could take this skill and reach out to a greater audience, until now.

I love listening to other's opinions, asking questions, analyzing, and interpreting-- fundamental aspects when it comes to writing. I love to facilitate the writing process for others; helping them navigate through bodies of text, help formulate their own opinions, and eventually find evidence to support their claims. It's a guilty pleasure of mine to see a moment of epiphany in others-- when their writers block is lifted and suddendly they are flooded with great thoughts and ideas.

Since this is my first time, I would like for my students to contact me directly and inform me with what they are struggling with.

Providing any information/resources before our sessions will help me better prepare. If a writing assignment is based on a book, article, poem, research etc. I would like for them to send me links, pdfs, and or copies (if these are not available, sending me the title and author is also fine). Providing the actual assignment/prompt would also be recommended; therefore I have a better understanding as to what the prompt is looking for.

Sessions will more than likely be dependent on the individual-- writing can be easier/come more naturally for some.

Don't feel obligated to learn the way you are being taught; if you are not understanding the material presented politely tell your tutor.

Writing doesn't have to have a structure, nor should it feel like it. The best writing comes when it's natural and reflects you, not your tutor.

If you feel stressed or overwhelmed because you feel like you're getting nowhere with your writing, tell your tutor. Sometimes stepping away from your thoughts is the best way to refresh and not burn out.

Ask questions. Don't be afraid to say you don't understand.

Ask for your tutor's opinion; sometimes having an open discussion about the topic helps you articulate/organize your ideas.

*I find recording these conversations helps remind people of what was said, so it's not so difficult later on trying to reiterate ideas for your assignment.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Did I understand the reading/body of text I am to write about? What are the key points? Could I summarize this text in my own words?

What exactly is this assignment asking me to do?

Have I gathered all the possible information that could help me?

If I didn't understand the text, what was confusing? why doesn't this make sense?
