About Caitlin

As a tutor, my goal is to assist students in completing their assignments, while also instilling learning skills that will support their education for years to come. My focus in every tutoring session is on empowering my students’ ability to take control of their education and their future. By building new skills from the strengths and goals of my students, we establish a foundation of confidence and motivation.

Over the last decade, I have taught students as young as third grade through college age. As a result, I have had the opportunity to bring hope and success to hundreds of students who believed they were not capable of reaching their goals. I wish to continue being of service as a teacher and mentor to students and learners of all kinds.

My first tutoring position was as part of the California public middle school program AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination). This program stressed the importance of reinforcing a student’s learning by teaching them study skills, such as utilizing text books, note taking, group learning, and research, to find answers for themselves. As tutors, it was our goal to assist students in completing their assignments, while also instilling in them study skills they would take far beyond our classroom.

This focus on empowering the student in their everyday learning showed them that they had the power to take control of their education and their future. In every tutoring and teaching position I have held since, I have applied this same ethos.

 



My first tutoring position was through the Garden Grove School District as a part of their AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program focused on teaching 7th and 8th graders learning and study skills that would support their education for years to come. 

After graduating with a BFA from Chapman University, I spent two years tutoring 3rd through 8th grade ESL students in reading comprehension, grammar and sentence structure, and essay writing skills. Then, while pursuing my MFA, I spent three years teaching English Composition and Litertaure at George Mason University.

After receiving my master's degree, I received ACT tutoring from The Ladder Method in Los Angeles, as well as SAT training from Flex College Prep in Irvine, where I currently work part-time. In addition to tutoring various test preparation courses (including ACT, SAT, TOEFL and ISEE) I have continued to tutor students of all ages and backgrounds in reading comprehension, literary analysis, sentence structure, essay writing, and grammar.

I have also worked with students on their college application essays for about four cumulative years. I enjoy helping each student reflect on their successes, as well as their failures, to communicate their interests, personality, and future goals to an admissions committee.
