About Richard

My tutoring stands out because I love the English language and am truly passionate about clear communication. I know the skills that are required to become an excellent essay writer and editor. And I know those skills have to be practiced with good feedback so you can make progress. The skills I will be training you in are skills that I trained in myself under the expert tutelage of a British "A" level examiner for a year while I was preparing to apply to the British university system. Later, I received training in teaching English as a second language under the supervision of Cambridge University and received the CELTA certificate. The early "A" level training stood me in good stead in my professional life, as I progressed from technical writer to business analyst to systems analyst and software quality assurance engineer. There's nothing you can't do once you have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

I actually started as a technical writer, writing user guides for computer systems that I was very familiar with.  Later, it seemed a natural progression to deliver classroom training to the learners.  Then I found out I enjoyed the work and signed up to study for the CELTA certificate, which is important if you want to teach English as a second language.  I got private students and taught them English for years.  In the meantime I had a practice teaching writing and editing, mostly to Russian-speaking computer scientists who wanted to write for professional publications.

Trained within the British educational system in English composition and editing, comparable to Advanced English Composition 101 at college level.

B.A. in English Literature from New York University.

CELTA certificate granted to me after intensive program in teaching English as a second language.

First find out what the student wants to achieve.  Then, assess their abilities and design a program that will move them towards their goal.

Almost entirely adult learners who were strongly motivated to succeed. Their careers depended on mastering the training I was giving them.

Don't be afraid of being challenged; when you look back, the teachers you had who pushed the most are the ones you benefitted from the most.  Pick someone who is passionate about the meaning of their work and who really knows the difference between passing quality and excellence.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I hope a teacher will help a prospective student talk through their needs so they understand what they are asking for.  But it doesn't hurt for the student to search their own hearts to understand their needs.  I alwayas say, getting what you want is easy, knowing what you want is much harder.
