About Alison

Thank you for your interest! My name is Alison Potter, and I have been tutoring students of all ages for almost 25 years. I have a bachelors degree in child and adolescent studies with an emphasis in teaching and classroom theory. I also received a masters in clinical social work in 2004 with an emphasis on children and families and a credential in school counseling.

I have worked with dozens of students in multiple subjects, including college-level, with observable and tangible results. In addition, I spent many years working as a pediatric social worker at various hospitals.

As a school social worker I specialized in working with children with ADHD and learning disabilities. I also worked for several years in multiple schools and varying grade levels conducting research studies, student teaching elementary-aged children, and assisting teachers with academics. In addition, I spent several years tutoring masters-level students in research writing and statistics at my alma mater, USC, in Southern California.

What sets me apart from other tutors is my holistic approach to teaching the child. What does this mean? In addition to assisting with homework and other class work, I also utilize clinical and developmental techniques and assessments to address each child’s individual strengths, weaknesses, and needs. Each child is unique, therefore tutoring requires the ability to tailor each session to the needs of each individual child. I work hard in my own time to develop a curriculum for each student in conjunction with assigned work from school. Tutoring allows very personalized and focused time with each child that they often don’t receive in the classroom. I have seen lasting results for over two decades and have a passion for preparing each student to succeed not only in childhood but well into adulthood.

I charge $50/hour per student. With the current and unique environment of distance learning due to COVID-19, I am offering a discount to parents with two or more children. If you desire I work with two children at one time the charge is $40 per hour per student since attention will be divided between two students.

I teach multiple subjects including writing, reading, spelling, history, geography, math, science, and more. I specialize in writing, reading comprehension, phonics, literature, spelling, social sciences, biology, and other sciences. I’ve helped multiple students improve reading and comprehension by one or two grade levels.
