About Anna

My work as an actor and singer has made me skilled in communication and an excellent listener. My most unique gift as a tutor and teacher is my ability to discover each student's individual language and speak it with them. I have been a tutor and writing coach for ten years, and work as a copy editor for professional writers as well. I also teach SAT prep courses in the classroom setting through A-List Education.

I love engaging with students and turning something they were potentially anxious about into something they are proud of. Most times when I tutor, I learn from the student as we work together. I enjoy incorporating a student's interests or special skills into our work whenever possible. When I tutor test prep, I get excited about lifting up the student's possibility for entrance into various schools, knowing that the skills we work on to test better are skills that will serve the student throughout their academic careers and beyond.

I first taught theatre classes while acting in different productions. Around the same time, I found myself tutoring students in math, writing, literature, and beginner Spanish. After graduating college, I saw that A-List Education needed SAT prep teachers, and I trained with them before beginning to teach SAT prep courses in the classroom setting. While performing at various theaters, I developed curricula for Shakespeare, creative writing, and storytelling classes. Now I teach with A-List and tutor privately (elementary through high school, and college writing).

I hold a BA in English and theatre from Loyola University Maryland, where I graduated summa cum laude. I also work as an actor and singer. I have taught SAT prep in the classroom setting for two years, and worked as a tutor and writing coach for 10 years. I also work as a copy editor for professional writers. While working at various theaters, I have developed curricula for Shakespeare, creative writing, and storytelling courses and taught them through school to theater partner programs.

English

At my first session with a student, I like to see an example of their work (if SAT prep, I'll administer or score a practice test; if writing, I'll want to look at a piece of their writing) to discover our starting point. I'll ask the student about their specific needs as well as their interests, and then we can create an individualized plan of study for their success.

I have worked with students ages 5 through college. Some have English as their first language, and some do not. Some are shy, and some are not. Regardless, we work to combine the students' strengths and interests to serve areas in which they want to grow. I have also taught theatre in Slovakia with Dramatic Adventure Theatre.

I would tell the student to look for a teacher that is kind but demanding, and that if they don't "click" or feel like a good fit after the first few sessions, that it's okay to try working with someone else.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what frustrates them on a topic/subject (for example, "I get angry because I can't seem to memorize x,y, or z), what their goals are ("I want to improve my writing to be more clear and direct"), and what they enjoy, as I love to incorporate a student's passions into their learning when possible.
